AZUSA, Calif. – For the second straight game, the visitors were the aggressors.
California Baptist jumped ahead early and never looked back as they posted a 10-3 victory on Friday evening against the Cougars.
The contest was the second straight win for the Lancers in the four-game PacWest series. On Saturday the set concludes with a doubleheader in Riverside, Calif.
Similar to Thursday's game, the visitors set the tone in the first inning. California Baptist scored six runs on four hits highlighted by a Ryan Williams grand slam to rightfield. Azusa Pacific scored their first run in the third frame when Pablo O'Connor hit a sacrifice fly deep to centerfield which scored Cam Bennett.
California Baptist responded in the fourth inning. Nick Plaia hit a solo homerun then Zack Norris scampered home as the visitors manufactured a run when Luke Navigato was caught in a run down. The Lancers (26-14, 19-9 PacWest) got their third homerun of the game in the fifth stanza when John Glenn hit a solo shot as they went ahead 9-1.
Azusa Pacific couldn't get enough momentum to mount a comeback. The Lancers starting pitcher Andrew Bernstein kept the home team off balance. The righthander went seven innings as he allowed seven hits and struck out six in 104 pitches.
The Cougars put a solo run on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Michael Staudinger singled home O'Connor with a two outs. Each team touched home one time in the ninth inning. California Baptist scored on a wild pitch while Sean Aspinall hit his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the frame for Azusa Pacific (30-6, 17-5).
Bennett had a solid day at the plate with a 4-for-4 outing to pace the Cougars.Â
