Cougars Deep Six Holy Names

AZUSA, Calif. – For all the all the offensive outbursts the Cougars have shown recently, it is a shame that the season is nearing its conclusion.

On a warm Saturday afternoon Azusa Pacific honored its seniors pregame then had a celebration of sorts during the contest as they topped Holy Names 6-2 in the home finale.

With one game left in the season the Cougars record now stands at 6-9-1 overall and 6-5-1 in PacWest games.

HIGHLIGHTS

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars fired a season high 26 shots as they scored six times – also a season high number. Fifteen of the team's shots were on frame.

Azusa Pacific scored the first two goals courtesy of Callum Wallace (10th minute) and Stephen Flora (39th) but the Hawks responded with a pair of goals to close out the half. Hernan Mercado scored a deflected goal in the 40th minute then Connor Daugherty found the back of the cage with just under two minutes left before the break.

After the 15-minute intermission Azusa Pacific wasted little time in taking a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Kaleb Armbrust scored what proved to be the game-winner just 42 seconds in the frame on a penalty kick.

Although the Cougars were scored "just" three more goals, they had opportunities for more. None the less, Arturo Astora had net-finders in the 51st and 71st minutes then Flora recorded a brace of his own in the 74th minute.

QUOTEABLE

HIGH SCORING COUGARS: Over the last three games the Cougars have found the back of the cage 13 times. No other PacWest team has scored more in that time.

SENIOR DAY: Prior to the game the program honored Armbrust, Andrew Boyd, Javier Chavez, Jesus Diego Arteaga and Zach McCollum.

UP NEXT: Azusa Pacific travels to Dixie State on Saturday for an 8 p.m. (MST) first  kick.
