Box Score 2 AZUSA, Calif. -- Senior leftfielder Janelle Eccles couldn't have picked a better moment for her first home run of the 2016 season, crushing a no-doubt two-run home run for a 6-4 walkoff victory over Hawai'i Pacific in the opening game of Azusa Pacific's doubleheader sweep of the Sharks Tuesday evening in Azusa.
For good measure, she added a solo shot in the third inning as the Cougars posted a mercy-rule 12-0 win in five innings to complete the Pacific West Conference sweep, which lifts Azusa Pacific to 24-8 overall and 11-3 in the PacWest heading into a Saturday, April 9 doubleheader at home against Concordia.
On the day, Eccles went four-for-seven, registering all extra-base hits with a double and a triple to go with her two home runs, and her opening-game heroics rescued the Cougars after they had given up a 3-2 lead by conceding runs in the sixth and seventh to the Sharks. Freshman third baseman Christine Pinela tied things up in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out double off the top of the outfield wall in left-center. Eccles then jumped on a 1-0 pitch, lifting a deep fly ball well over the fence in left for the two-run walkoff home run.
Eccles was two-for-four in the opener, and Pinela was also two-for-four with two doubles off the wall in left that both came within inches of clearing the fence. Sophomore first basemanKayla Jimenez added a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth that turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead heading into the final two innings.
In the second game, Azusa Pacific capitalized on three Hawai'i Pacific errors for three runs in the first inning, and the Cougars added five runs in the second, all with two outs. Junior centerfielder Abry Moreno hit a two-out single up the middle to spark the second-inning rally, and junior second baseman Nicki Sprague provided a two-run bases-loaded single before senior third baseman Madison Hernandez smacked a three-run home run to center to push the lead to 8-0.
Eccles' one-out home run to right-center sparked a three-run third inning, and she tripled in the fourth inning and later scored on an error to provide the final run as the Cougars notched a season-high 12 runs. Freshman Cayla Broussard went three-for-three with two runs in the second game, and Moreno was two-for-two with a pair of walks to help lead Azusa Pacific's 11-hit attack.
Junior lefthander Carly Xepoleas struck out five while tossing a four-hit shutout in the nightcap, while junior righthander Ariana von Zboray was credited with the win with two innings of relief in the opener.
Hawaii Pacific was led offensively by Kristy Washizaki, who collected two hits in each game, and Dominque Walker also extended her hitting streak to 14 games with hits in both games of the twinbill. The Sharks are now winless in 12 games on the mainland, falling to 13-25 overall and 9-11 in the PacWest heading into a Wednesday visit to No. 10-ranked California Baptist.
