An All Around Team Win

AZUSA, Calif. – It was a total team effort.

Azusa Pacific used 19 players, most of whom were pitchers, to top nearby rival Cal Poly Pomona 4-1 in the final non-conference game for the Cougars.

It is the eighth win in the last 10 games for the Cougars, who improve to 19-17. The home team will take the next nine days off before returning to PacWest play at Dixie State.

The Cougars banged out 11 hits with the foursome of Mychael Goudeau, Pablo O'Connor, Michael Staudinger and Rene Reyes each recording two hits.

Cal Poly Pomona had its chances throughout the game but left 12 runners on base. Using nearly all available pitchers, Azusa Pacific ran nine different pitchers to the mound to limit any scoring damage. Kale Morton was only hurler to throw more than an inning as the left hander went 1.1 innings and was deemed the winning pitcher. David May came into the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.

Azusa Pacific took the lead early when Staudinger hit an opposite field two-out single which scored Goudreau. The Cougars added to their lead with a two-run fourth inning. Staudinger started the frame with his third career triple then was brought home two batters later on a Cam Bennett double. Reyes then brought Bennett home with a one-out base knock.

During those first four inning, the Broncos loaded the bases twice but each time the Azusa Pacific hurlers worked out of the jam. Cal Poly Pomona put together just enough base runners to score in the sixth inning. After three straight singles, Jacob Bernardy crossed the plate on a wild pitch with two outs to make the score 3-1.

With one-out in the sixth inning the Cougars got that run right back. Reyes hit his second homerun of the season when he pulled the 1-0 offering from Peter Beattie over the leftfield wall for the game's final run.

In the final inning the Broncos brought the winning run to the plate after a pair of hits but Daniel Pitts flew out to left field to end the game.
