Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- The Azusa Pacific offense produced three home runs and 12 runs on 19 hits in a 7-1, 5-0 doubleheader sweep at Dominican, but the Cougar pitching staff went 14 innings without allowing an earned run as senior righthander Narissa Garcia fired a complete-game two-hitter in Game 1 while junior lefthander Carly Xepoleas fired six scoreless innings in a Game 2 shutout to secure a sweep.
With the sweep, No. 23-ranked Azusa Pacific improved to 36-10 overall and 23-5 in the PacWest, solidifying its lead atop the Pacific West Conference standings to set up a potential winner-take-all doubleheader Friday night against No. 16 California Baptist. The Cougars also extended their winning streak, which began with an 8-2 Game 2 road win at California Baptist on April 16, to a season-high nine games.
Garcia struck out eight in her complete-game two-hitter, surrendering just two hits to Dominican, whose only run came on consecutive two-out errors in the bottom of the fifth inning. Garcia promptly retired seven straight batters to end the game, bookending a victory in which she retired the first seven batters she faced to start the game as she improved to 13-3 on the season.
Combined with Xepoleas' five-inning no-hitter against Holy Names on Saturday, Azusa Pacific pitchers had thrown nine consecutive no-hit innings before Alexis Chinchilla picked up a two-out single in the fourth inning.
In Game 2, Xepoleas was similarly sharp, scattering three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four in six scoreless innings before Ariana von Zboray finished off the shutout with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.
Offensively, Azusa Pacific got a two-run home run in the first game from senior rightfielderJanelle Eccles to go with solo homers in the nightcap from junior second baseman Nicki Sprague and sophomore first baseman Kayla Jimenez.
Sophomore leftfielder Illiana Jimenez extended her hitting streak to nine games, going one-for-four with an RBI in the opener and two-for-four with two runs and three steals in Game 2 to extend her PacWest-leading season stolen base total to 37.
