Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. -- After wrapping up the first day of the Tournament of Champions with back-to-back shutouts, Azusa Pacific surrendered just two runs in two games Saturday in an 8-2 win over Western Washington and a 2-0 shutout over Western Oregon.
Junior righthander Ariana von Zboray fired her second consecutive shutout, following yesterday's complete-game effort with seven more scoreless innings in a three-hit shutout over Western Oregon to wrap up the day.
In the opener, the Cougars jumped out to an 8-0 lead over Western Washington as senior righthander Narissa Garcia dealt four scoreless frames to start the game. Azusa Pacific's six-run third inning broke a scoreless tie, and the Cougars added single runs in the fourth and fifth to build up the eight-run lead before the Vikings stayed alive with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Azusa Pacific sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning, capitalizing on three WWU errors for a six-run outburst. The first five Cougars to the plate reached safely, and senior first baseman Jessica Melcher and senior designated player Ally Wimer delivered run-scoring singles in the frame. Freshman rightfielder Annie Sisler and junior second baseman Nicki Sprague produced RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to push the lead to 8-0.
Garcia struck out five in 5.2 innings of work, improving to 9-2 on the year, and junior lefthanderCarly Xepoleas recorded the final four outs to finish off the win.
In the second game, von Zboray retired the first Western Oregon hitter in all seven innings, and she retired 13 of the final 16 batters she faced to improve to 6-1 on the year with the complete-game win.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fifth, freshman third baseman Christine Pinela led off with a single through the left side, setting up the Cougars' first run of the game when sophomore leftfielder Illiana Jimenez hit a single to left that was mishandled and led to Wimer scoring from second base to give Azusa Pacific a 1-0 lead. Two more Western Oregon errors with two outs in the seventh inning extended the inning for the Cougars, who took advantage on another Jimenez basehit, an infield single to first that scored Abry Moreno from third base.
Madison Hernandez led the Cougar offense in five games over two days, batting eight-for-16 (.500) with three runs and a team-high five RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Kayla Jimenezwas six-for-13 (.462), and Illiana Jimenez (eight-for-20) and Sprague (six-for-15) each batted .400 in the tournament.
Azusa Pacific's trio of von Zboray, Garcia, and Xepoleas accounted for three shutouts and combined for a 0.41 ERA over the five-game tournament.
The rest of the Cougars' regular-season schedule consists of 10 Pacific West Conference doubleheaders, starting with home matchups next week with Hawai'i Pacific (April 5) and Concordia (April 9).
