Cougars Blank Two At Tournament Of Champions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Narissa Garcia and Ariana von Zboray each tossed complete-game shutouts to lead Azusa Pacific to two wins in three games Friday at the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock.

The Cougars dropped their opener to Central Washington, 2-1, in extra innings, then bounced back for an 8-0 mercy-rule win in five innings over Montana State Billings before completing the full day with a 5-0 win over Northwest Nazarene.

Garcia struck out six and surrendered just two hits in her five-inning win over MSU Billings, while von Zboray went the full seven innings for a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts. Junior lefthander Carly Xepoleas did everything she could to give her team a shot at a perfect three-win day by going the distance through eight innings of the 2-1 opening defeat, scattering two runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

It was the second straight year that Azusa Pacific lost its Tournament of Champions opener by a 2-1 margin in extra innings before bouncing back for two wins to wrap up the first day.

In the opener, the Cougars answered an Austin Wilkerson fourth-inning solo home run with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman shortstop < b="">Cayla Broussard drew a bases-loaded two-out walk to tie the game at 1-1, and the game remained scoreless through the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings before Central Washington broke the deadlock with a one-out RBI single in the eighth inning.

Azusa Pacific moved the potential tying run into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the eighth, but Central Washington preserved the win by escaping with a strikeout and lineout with a runner at third base in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In the Cougars' game that followed, which was scoreless through the first three innings, the Cougars put together an eight-run fourth inning which was highlighted by senior catcherMadison Hernandez's three-run home run. All eight runs scored with two outs in the frame, and the three-run home run was Hernandez's eighth home run of the year, and Garcia finished off the shutout win by retiring three in a row after a leadoff single in the fifth to improve to 8-2 on the year with her 8-0 win over MSU Billings.

In the final game of the day, von Zboray fired the complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win over Northwest Nazarene. The Cougars spotted von Zboray an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning and once more in the second to give von Zboray an early lead. Leading the way were leadoff hitter Illiana Jimenez and No. 2 hitter Broussard, who each went three-for-five while senior catcher Ally Wimer, who doubled and homered to highlight the Cougars' offensive production.

Azusa Pacific wraps up the tournament with two more games Saturday, taking on Western Washington at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Western Oregon.
