HILO, Hawaii – The Cougars opened up PacWest play with a four-game series on the Big Island as they started with a Saturday doubleheader against Hawaii Hilo
Game 1 – Azusa Pacific 3, Hawaii Hilo 2
A handful of runs in the fourth inning plus some solid starting pitching was more than enough as Azusa Pacific took the opener.
The Cougars had three runners cross the plate in the fourth frame which began with a Michael Staudinger single. A pair of ground out advanced him to third base before a throwing error extended the inning as Staudinger scored the game's first run. Two batters later Chris Sandberg single which scored Luke Huerta. The final run of the inning came when a Cam Bennett single scored Zach Taylor. All of the run were unearned.
The home team responded in their half of the inning when the pieced together two runs on two hits. From that point forward Azusa Pacific starting pitcher Jonny Reid made that one-run lead hold up.
Hawaii Hilo looked to tie the game as they recorded a hit in three of the final five innings but the Cougars kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard. Reid threw 8.1 innings where he struck out five and successfully navigated around six hits and two walks.
Bennett had a team high three hits while Staudinger had two base knocks to pace the Azusa Pacific offense.
Game 2 – Azusa Pacific 6, Hawaii Hilo 4 (8 Innings)
A pair of run in the eighth inning completed a conference opening doubleheader sweep.
The Cougars jumped out to a three-run lead after two innings but the Vulcans responded with a three-run fourth inning.
In the sixth inning a
Steven Garrett homerun put the Cougars back in front 4-3. However, in the seventh frame Azusa Pacific scored an unearned run when Yoshinori Yanaka singled home Phillip Steering to tie the game, once again, this time at 4-4.
The final two runs of the game came in the eighth inning when the Cougars scored two runs on a pair of hits. Justin Gomez singled home Troy Baird for the first run then Zach Taylor added the insurance run when he crossed the plate on a balk.
Dillon Miyashiro picked up the win for the Cougars when he went 2.1 innings in relief. Offensively Adrian Tovalin put together his first three-hit game of the season.
