AZUSA, Calif. -- No. 2-ranked Hawai`i Pacific won its fifth consecutive match to start the season, beating No. 17 Azusa Pacific with an 8-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Cougar Tennis Complex.

Match Results

Shepherd Newcomb and Christian Schmid earned the Cougars' only point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 win that represented the first point that Hawai`i Pacific has lost all season.

Azusa Pacific is now 8-2 on the season with the only losses coming against the top two teams in the West Region, where the Cougars are ranked third. The Sharks, which have reached the national final and won the Pacific West Conference each of the last two years, have now defeated the Cougars five times in a row.

Jan Meyer 's 25-match winning streak came to an end with his first loss to a player in NCAA Division II since March 2014. The No. 6 player in the nation Thibaud Berland upset Meyer 6-4, 7-6(5), knocking off the No. 1 player in the nation.

Juame Martinez-Vich was the first player off the court with a win for the Sharks, beating Alan Leahy for a second time after doing so two years ago, with a 7-5, 6-1 win. Clemens Graute then clinched the victory with a comeback win 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, Berland and Alexander Meyer defeated Jan Meyer and Olger van Gent 8-4, making it five consecutive doubles victories for Berland over Meyer.

On Monday, the Cougars will play the No. 1 team in the nation Barry in a rematch of the first-round match at the national tournament last spring. Hawai`i Pacific also plays Barry on Friday.
