First Place Finishes All Around

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The overcast and rainy condition didn't deter a dominated effort.

Abigail Wiet was the team's top scoring swimmer. She placed first in both of her individual events (400 IM and 200 Backstroke) while swimming the first leg of the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome finish first with a time of 1:53.98

Tamara Miller was nearly as great as she won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:43.92) and 500-yard freestyle (5:14.58) races. Her time in the 1000-yard race was the squad's best time this year in that race.

Not to be out-done, Alyse Darnall and Elodie Poo Chang also won a pair of individual events. Darnall won the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.99) as well as the 100-yard freestyle (54.33). Poo Chang posted the team's top time in the 50-yard freestyle (24.79) then won the 100-yard butterfly (59.58).

Also grabbing two first-place finishes for the Cougars was Kianna Mourer. The junior won both the one- and three-meter diving events. Her score of 288.85 during the one-meter competition broke the school record she set two seasons ago. In addition to the new school record, Mourer qualified for the NCAA pre-championships meet in March; which will be held in Alabama. She edged out teammate Rachel Johns for the top spot in the three-meter event (239.25-235.85).

"We are very excited about Kianna's performance in Santa Cruz," said diving coach Cindy Adams. "We are using each meet to prepare for the NCAA event and Kianna's score of 288.85 is exactly the score and performance she will be targeting in Alabama in March."

Getting into the first-place fun was Hallie Jones (200-yard freestyle, 2:02:68), Heidi Zuniga (200-yard butterfly, 2:15.32) and Rachel Allison (200-yard breaststroke, 2:33.41).

The team takes the Thanksgiving weekend off before traveling to the Winter Invitational; last season the Cougars won the three-day event. This year the event will be held Dec. 2-4.
