MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The action continued both in the pool and on the diving boards on the second day of competition at the PCSC Championships at East Los Angeles College.
The prelims got off to a promising start as both Angelica Benitez and Mikaela Maemura earned spots in the finals of the 100 butterfly, while Ashley Cochran and Marcelina Halawczak claimed spots in the top 24 to earn team points. Aleena Herrera booked her ticket to the finals of the 400 IM, while Adelle Brush earned a spot in the B final for places 9-16. Kya Guikema and Ellie Sivesind both qualified for the B final in the 200 freestyle as well.
In the evening session, the Cougars' relay team of Sydnee Wilson, Maemura, Gillian Sato, and Sivesind took fourth in the 4x50 to open the evening. Benitez and Maemura hit the wall in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 fly. Coupled with the performances in the consolation heats from Cochran and Halawczak, the Cougars earned 78 points from this one event. Herrera picked up another 25 points with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM. The Cougars' best performance of the night came in the final event of the day, the 4x100 medley relay, where Maemura, Courtney Seljeseth, Benitez, and Wilson hit the wall second in a time of 3:47.77 to pick up 56 points.
Azusa Pacific finds itself in fourth place after day two, with the 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 4x50 medley relay on tap for Friday along with the prelims of the 1-meter diving competition.
