Western Woes

AZUSA, Calif. -- The No. 18 Azusa Pacific women's tennis team ran into another huge test Friday afternoon, taking on the No. 11 team in the nation, and Academy of Art came out on top 7-2 at the Cougar Tennis Complex.

Match Results

All three doubles matches were tight, but the Urban Knights, ranked No. 3 in the West Region, found a way to win all three, putting the Cougars in a big hole going into singles play, where Danae Ingwaldson and Natalie Johnson got Azusa Pacific's two points.

Johnson and Ingwaldson paired up at No. 1 doubles for the first time since February. Their match started with five consecutive breaks of serve before Nina Gajdosikova got the first hold of the match, allowing the Urban Knights to build an early lead. Ingwaldson and Johnson fought back to cut the deficit to just one game at 5-6, but the Urban Knights won the next two games for an 8-5 triumph.

Valeriia Kashina and Jackie Resler played their first match as a No. 2 team, also reuniting for the first time since February. The pair took a break-lead early in the set for a 3-1 advantage, but Lucia Zavarcikova and Jenny Johansson quickly erased the deficit and remained on serve until eventually winning 8-5.

At No. 3 doubles, the Cougars took the early lead once again with Lindsey Yeom and Bethany Duval playing their first match as partners in three years as teammates. The pair led for the majority of the set, but Dorota Markowska and Michelle Dandik went on a roll at the end to claim the set, 8-6.

Zavarcikova eventually clinched the match for Academy of Art with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Kashina before Azusa Pacific got its first point. That first point came from Johnson, who defeated Gajdosikova 6-4, 6-4 in their second meeting after the Cougar No. 1 got a win over Gajdosikova in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the fall individual tournament.

Ingwaldson earned the other victory in singles for Azusa Pacific, defeating Johansson 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. The senior led throughout the first set, but despite dropping the set turned right around to win the second and force a deciding tiebreak. Ingwaldson now has a six-match winning streak, improving to 12-8 on the year.

The loss drops the Cougars' record to 12-9 on the season with one regular season match left. Azusa Pacific will host UC San Diego next Saturday. The Cougars lost at UC San Diego 6-3 early in the season, and the Tritons come into the match ranked No. 4 in the West Region, while the Cougars are No. 5.
