SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Azusa Pacific women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Saturday afternoon with a sixth place finish in the Pacific West Conference tournament following a narrow loss to Point Loma, 5-3 at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
The Cougars took two out of three doubles sets, but couldn't carry the moment over into singles against the Sea Lions. The Cougars had won all five singles matches the last time the teams met, but Point Loma got a pair of big three set wins to clinch the match.
Natalie Johnson and Danae Ingwaldson won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles for Ingwaldson's 40th career win at No. 1 doubles in her final match in a Cougar uniform. Valeriia Kashina and Jackie Resler gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.Â
Sierra Troxel was subbed into the doubles lineup for just the second time since the first week of the season, pairing up with Bethany Duval. However, the pair could not pull out the victory in their first match as partners, falling 8-4 to Hillary Ramage and Kirsty Mountain.
The No. 25 ranked Sea Lions then got a quick win from Jen Weissman at No. 5 singles to even the score, defeating Lindsey Yeom, who had to be pulled from the doubles lineup earlier in the match.
Jackie Resler gave the Cougars the lead back with a 6-4, 6-3 win, concluding her freshman campaign with the second best record on the team at 15-8. Mountain evened the score in the fifth place match once again at 3-3, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles against Sierra Troxel.
Ramage and Nikki Newell then delivered the crucial singles victories to end Point Loma's season with a win. Newell beat Johnson 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Ramage came through a tight three-set match against Ingwaldson 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the match.
The Cougars finish the season 14-11 with four wins over teams that were ranked nationally in the NCAA Division II with a young roster that featured seven underclassmen and just two seniors.Â
