Naming The Prize

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Despite being eliminated from contention for the Pacific West Conference title on Thursday, the Azusa Pacific women's tennis team still has a chance to end the season with a couple of wins, which would mean a fifth place finish in the conference.

Match Results

The Cougars took a step toward doing just that with a dominant 5-0 win over Holy Names on Friday afternoon to advance to the fifth place match against Point Loma on Saturday at 2:00p.m.

Azusa Pacific swept doubles play and got singles victories from Jackie Resler and Danae Ingwaldson to clinch the victory over the No. 9 team in the West Region. The remaining four singles matches were not finished.

Valeriia Kashina and Resler got a one-sided victory at No. 2 singles, winning 8-0 for the first point of the day. Kashina and Resler are now 5-2 as a pair, and each have 15 total doubles victories overall, which is the most on the team.

Lindsey Yeom and Bethany Duval made it 2-0 shortly after with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. The two have been teammates for three years, but this was just their fifth time stepping onto the court as doubles partners, earning their third win in five sets.

Natalie Johnson and Ingwaldson completed the sweep, winning 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. The pair was ranked No. 15 in the nation to start the year, but actually spent most of the year with other partners. The win on Friday was their fifth this year as a pair.

Ingwaldson and Resler both cruised in their singles matches with Resler finishing first with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 and Ingwaldson won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Ingwaldson tied Kashina for most wins on the team this season, claiming her 15th, while Resler improved her record in 2015 to 14-8 as a freshman.
