Singles Success

AZUSA, Calif. – Rally was the word.

Less than 24 hours ago the Cougars won with the momentum created by sweeping the three doubles points, on Thursday they went a more difficult route but got the desired result.

Match Results

Azusa Pacific won a critical west region match-up with Cal State L.A. 5-4 by claiming four of the five singles matches.

Despite salvaging just the No. 3 doubles match, it proved to be a big factor in the overall team result. Danae Ingwaldson and Bethany Duval won their third straight match by topping Victoria Vo and Elizaveta Sokolova 8-4. Prior to that match concluding, the Cougars were still looking for their first team point of the afternoon after dropping the first and second doubles contests.

The Cougars really flipped the script during singles play. Ingwaldson won the first match off the courts with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 slot. Quickly thereafter Sierra Troxel got a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the sixth position and things were looking up for the home team.

Azusa Pacific won their third straight singles contest as Natalie Johnson won her 11th match of the season by dispatching of Sonia Landeros 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot. Cal State L.A. kept themselves alive as Nozomi Matsuoka got a straight sets win at the No. 2 postion.

The clinching point came from Lindsey Yeom who recorded a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Victoria Vo to seal the Cougars third straight team victory.

The Golden Eagles were able to win the final match on court as Sokolova won 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 over Jackie Resler in the third slot.
