Coming Up Short

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – An early deficit was too much to overcome.

Match Results

Despite its best comeback efforts, Azusa Pacific fell to Hawaii Pacific 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon in a west region match-up hosted by UC San Diego.

The doubles competition proved to be tight throughout but the Sharks did just enough to sweep the three matches. At the top doubles position Kristyna Hancarova and Nicole Hoynaski won a tension filled match 9-8 by winning the tiebreaker 7-5.

Lorena Gheorghe and Lea Kruse-Utermann knocked off the combo of Jackie Resler and Lindsey Yeom 8-4 in the middle doubles match-up. In the third doubles contest Vivan Hansen and Julia Sauer were able to pull out a 9-7 decision against Danae Ingwaldson and Bethany Duval.

Despite facing the big hole heading into singles play, the Cougars fought back. Kashina won 6-1, 6-2 over Hoynaski at the No. 2 slot while Resler won at the third position when Hansen retired late in the first set. Sierra Troxel also posted a win for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the sixth position.

However, it wasn't enough as Hancarova and Kruse-Utermann won in straight sets for Hawaii Pacific. Gheorge and Ingwaldson battled and split the first two set before Gheorge posted a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 victory at the No. 4 singles match.
