Taking on the top ranked team in NCAA Division II, Azusa Pacific dropped an 8-1 decision to Armstrong State on Monday afternoon.
The lone bright for the Cougars was Natalie Johnson's three-set win at the No. 1 singles position. In a match-up of two of the top players in the country Johnson, who came into the matched ranked 29th, knocked off third-ranked Clara Perez. Johnson won the first set in a tiebreaker then fell 6-2 in the second frame to set the final set. Johnson prevailed 10-4 in the super tiebreaker to seal the individual victory.
Aside from that victory, Azusa Pacific didn't have much else positive going for it. The Cougars won six games in the remaining singles matches as Armstrong State showed why they are the top ranked team in the nation.
Armstrong swept the three doubles matches.
Things don't get easier for Azusa Pacific as they duel with No. 6 Hawaii Pacific on Tuesday.
