Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – Despite a valiant effort, the Azusa Pacific women's volleyball couldn't get into the win column as they fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon to Dixie State.
The Red Storm, who came into the match sporting a top 10 regional ranking, did enough to pull out the three-set win
The combo of Kendahl Weiland and Lindsey Jones where vital to the Dixie State offense as they combined for 27 of the team's 50 kills. Jones had a match high 15 kills, along with a .583 hitting percentage, while Weiland registered a 12-kill match.
The match opened in promising fashion for the home team as the Cougars jumped out to a 12-6 lead. Dixie State slowly chipped away at their deficit from that point forward. The visitors eventually took the lead at 22-21. With the score 24-22 in Dixie State's favor a Mattie Shelford kill saved one set point. However, the Red Storm completed their first set comeback on the next point with a Nicole Kohler kill.
Dixie State continued that momentum at the start of the second set as they won six of the first seven points. The Red Storm stretched that lead to 13-7 before the Cougars stormed back to within 15-13. Unfortunately the scoring spree stopped there as the Red Storm kept Azusa Pacific at arm's length and pulled away to take the second frame.
Azusa Pacific started the third stanza in fine form as they rolled out to a 6-1 lead. With the score 12-7 in the Cougars favor, Dixie State began to get a strangle hold of the match. The Red Storm went on a 10-1 scoring spurt to grab a 17-13 advantage. A defiant Cougars team clawed their way back as they got their deficit down to 22-20 after a marathon point was ended by a Joy Reinke kill. However, the Red Storm won three of the match's final four points to seal the win.
Mattie Shelford continued to perform well offensively. For the second time in the last three matches she took team high honors in kills (10) while tallying a .500 hitting percentage. Reinke had a solid match with seven kills and a .318 hitting mark.
Along the back row Kristina Kam recorded a Cougar best 14 digs.
Azusa Pacific continues its six-match homestand to end the 2014 schedule with a 7:00 p.m. Tuesday contest against Chaminade.
