Gone In A Blink

AZUSA, Calif. – Well, that went fast!

Azusa Pacific's program-setting 20-match winning streak went up in smoke without much suspense as reigning NCAA DIII runner-up La Verne ransacked the Cougars in a 3-set win, 25-11, 25-20, 25-13 Tuesday afternoon in the Felix Event Center.

The Leopards, who by their standards have struggled this year after splitting their first 14 matches, had little trouble dispatching Azusa Pacific and looked every bit the national championship contender that it was last year.  Meanwhile, the Cougars, whose 20-0 record coming into the match was the second best in all of college volleyball (NAIA member Eastern Oregon is 21-0), was handed a 3-set setback in just over 60 minutes of play.

The Cougars never found their rhythm offensively against a La Verne defense that limited APU to a microscopic .031 hitting percentage. Azusa Pacific recorded 28 kills but committed 24 attack errors on 129 attempts, while the Leopards hit a season-best .330 as a team with 42 kills and only 7 errors.

After La Verne jumped all over APU for an opening set 25-11 win, the Cougars responded with their strongest effort in the second frame. APU posted 14 kills and a .119 hitting percentage in the set and stayed within striking distance throughout much of the contest before the Leopards pulled away late for a 25-20 victory.

The third set followed a similar pattern to the opener as La Verne controlled the action en route to a 25-13 win, completing the sweep and snapping the Cougars' 21-match winning streak that dated back to last year.

Senior Jackie Winfield led Azusa Pacific with 7 kills, while Flora Sebestyen added 6 kills and a team-high 9 digs. Mia Medrano paced the back-row effort with 13 digs and recorded the Cougars' lone service ace. Senior Jacey Loewen contributed 5 kills and 3 block assists off the bench.

La Verne's dominate play was led by Alanna Jones, who paced the Leo attack with 12 kills, while Mariah Ray added 8 kills on a .438 hitting percentage. The Leopards also held a decisive advantage at the net, totaling 24 block assists compared to 8 for the Cougars.

With the win La Verne improves to 8-7 while the Cougars fall to 20-1.  APU returns to play Thursday (Oct. 15) when it visits Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, Calif., for a 7 p.m. match.
