Crown Them with a Championship

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – In the end there can only be one champion.

With their 5-0 win over Dominican on Saturday, Azusa Pacific sealed the 2014 PacWest men's soccer title and became champions.

It is the ninth time in program history they have finished first or tied for first at the season ending conference standings. It is their first outright conference title since 2010 when the Cougars won the Golden State Athletic Conference.

"It's really sweet to seal the PacWest. I knew we were capable of winning the league this year. It feels great especially for the guys. They put in a lot of hard work and it's great to have it pay off with a championship," said head coach Dave Blomquist.

Said senior Jeremy Bishop, "To play well on the field and build relationships off the field; this feels great. We are striving for a strong finish and this championship is just the beginning for the team this year."

From the get-go on Saturday Azusa Pacific kept the ball on their offensive end of the field.

Carlos Garcia-Partida nearly scored the game's first goal in the 16th minute. His right footed shot from inside the box off of Keyran Kelly's corner kick was saved by a Penguin goalkeeper Erik Anderson. Moments later Bishop worked a nice give-and-go with Keenan Armbrust but Bishop's shot from 10 yards was denied by Anderson.

Azusa Pacific persistence finally broke through in the 33rd minute. Garcia-Partida gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and deposited his right footed shot into the left corner for his fifth goal of the season.

The Cougars made the contest a two-goal game in the 64th minute when Keenan Armbrust scored his fifth goal of the year. The junior controlled a pass from Raul Martinez then his laser shot glanced off a Dominican defender and into the back of the net.

Armbrust scored his second goal of the day with an absolute rocket of a shot in 72nd minute. The game's fourth goal came in next minute when Kaleb Armbrust found the back of the cage for the first time in 2014. Bishop concluded the scoring when he controlled a great long ball pass from Cole Lambert in the 89th minute.

"We were really solid in our defensive positioning and balance. When our defense needed to, they made the plays. We were very disciplined today," Blomquist said. "Sometimes when you have possession as much as we did and when you are creating chances you wear the other team down and I thought we did that today. All of our ball moment really created some great opportunities that we were able to capitalize on."

The Cougars defense limited Dominican to just one shot while firing 20 of their own. Azusa Pacific held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Azusa Pacific still has one more conference game left in 2014. On Thursday they will host Fresno Pacific at 5:30 p.m. Last season the two teams tied for the best record in the PacWest.
