Cougars Can't Find Winning Formula in Utah

Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah - A successful trip to Utah was not in the offering for the Azusa Pacific women's volleyball team.

Dixie State held down the Cougars from the get-go as the home team came away with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-22) victory on Friday afternoon.

The Red Storm offense was clicking most of the evening as they upped their record to 6-0 in PacWest play while improving to 9-5 overall. The Cougars record now stands at 7-7 overall and 4-2 in league action.

Dixie State recorded a season best .405 team hitting percentage. Edithza Urias and Maddie Rex each notched a match high 10 kills. In addition to her match high kills mark, Urias hit .474 on 19 attempts. 

During the first two sets the Red Storm went on significant scoring bursts. The home team made a 11-9 lead into 16-9 with five quick points and never let the Cougars back into the frame. Dixie State continued that momentum by scoring 12 of the second set's first 16 points and never looked back as they held a 2-0 lead in the match.

Azusa Pacific was just a step behind in the third set as they tried to get back in the match. Down 16-9 the Cougars rattled off six straight points to get within 16-15.After Dixie State responded by building a 19-15 lead, the Cougars fought back to within 21-20. Unfortunately for the visitors they couldn't get over the hump asthe Red Storm swept the match.

Mattie Shelford had a team best seven kills for Azusa Pacific. Alicia Utke chipped-in a five-kill afternoon.

Azusa Pacific steps out of PacWest play for a Tuesday match against La Sierra at the Felix Event Center. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
