Sunbirds Fight for Three-Set Win

Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – In a match that featured 12 lead changes and tight play throughout, Fresno Pacific pulled out a 3-0 (25-20, 29-27, 25-23) victory over Azusa Pacific.

It was the 10th straight win for the Sunbirds who came into the match receiving votes in this week's AVCA national poll. Fresno Pacific's offense was efficient to the tune of a team hitting percentage of .300. The home team's offense was led by Rupia Inck 14 kills while Kathleen Anderson recorded 10 kills and a .643 hitting percentage.

Morghan Williams had six kills in the opening set in aiding the home team to a first set victory. Fresno Pacific took the lead for good at 13-12 and slowly pulled away. The Sunbirds eventually increased their lead to 21-16 but the Cougars fought back and got within 23-20 after an Alicia Utke kill. However, Azusa Pacific couldn't get any closer.

The extended second set saw the lead change hands four times and it was tied on 10 different occasions. The largest lead either team had was a three-point spread. Fresno Pacific held a slim lead as the set came to a close but the Cougars had a chance late in the frame. After saving set points at 24-23 and 25-24, Azusa Pacific won back-to-back points to get a set point at 26-25. However, Fresno Pacific rebounded after calling a timeout and on their fourth set point grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match.

During the third stanza there were six lead changes and, just like the previous set, 10 ties as well. Once again, there wasn't more than a three point lead for either team. Fresno Pacific nudged ahead and took a 24-21 lead. However, the Cougars got a kill from Katy Crouse and a service ace from Crystal Dedes to pull within 24-23. Unfortunately the match ended on an Inch kill.

Mattie Shelford continued to pace the Cougars offense as the outside hitter tallied 11 kills with a .375 hitting percentage. Jaden Louie served as the primary setter a majority of the evening and dished out 31 of the squads 42 assists.

The Cougars will look to snap their five-match losing skid when they return home on Saturday as they host Dixie State at 3:00 p.m.
