Azusa Pacific Falls in Hawaii Finale

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – The third match during a three-day stretch in Hawaii didn't go very smoothly as the Cougars found themselves on the short end of a three-set sweep to Hawaii Hilo 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.

Azusa Pacific offensive rhythm was struggling most of the match. While they connected for 37 kills as a team, they committed 28 errors in 125 attempts to post a .072 hitting percentage. 

Crystal Dedes had a team best nine kills from the middle hitter position while Ashley Midland and Hayley Beetstra contributed eight and seven kills respectively.

The first set crept in the Vulcans direction late in the frame. With the Cougars (11-9, 7-4) leading 17-15, the home team took the lead by scoring six of the seven points to take a 21-18 lead. They never let Azusa Pacific back into the set as they went ahead 1-0 in the match.

In the second set the teams combined for 19 hitting errors with 13 of them coming from the Cougars. The Vulcans took advantage of the miscues. They took the lead for good at 14-13 and continued to grow that advantage as they took a two set edge in the match.

Azusa Pacific got slightly behind early in the third set and couldn't dig out of that hole. The big run came just before the midway point in the frame. With Hawaii Hilo (5-10, 4-8) holding an 11-10 lead, the home team pushed that advantage to 19-12. The Cougars fought back from that seven point deficit to within 23-20 but couldn't draw any closer.Hawaii Hilo was led offensively by Callie Aberle's 13-kills evening. Sienna Davis directed the offense by dishing out 28 assists. 

The Cougars road swing through the PacWest continues on Wednesday evening at California Baptist.
