Box Score HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Azusa Pacific women's volleyball squad battled deep into the night to post a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-12, 25-27, 15-10) win over Chaminade on Thursday.
The win is the fourth straight for the Cougars as they improve to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in PacWest matches.
Hayley Beetstra had one of the best matches of her collegiate career by recording 13 kills and a. 522 hitting percentage. Mattie Shelford tied Beetstra for team high honors in kills. Not to be outdone was Ashley Midland who tallied 12 kills and hit .524 with six block assists and two block solos.
Despite not pulling away in the opening set the Cougars held the lead for a majority of the tightly played first set. Holding a slim 21-20 lead, the Cougars finished the frame on a 4-1 scoring spurt to go up 1-0. The second set was similar as neither team held a lead more than two points. Ultimately the home team did just enough down the stretch to tie the match at a set each.
Azusa Pacific took control from of the third stanza from the first serve. They jumped out to a 14-3 lead and never let the Swords within nine points after that in cruising to the win.
The fourth set played out much more similarly to the first two frames. Azusa Pacific held a four-point lead early (9-5) but the teams went toe-to-toe from that point forward. The Cougars had a match point at 24-23 but they couldn't convert. The Swords took advantage as they finally won the set on their second set point.
In the final set the Cougars pulled away early. After trading the first four points, the Cougars took a 12-4 lead via a 10-2 scoring spree. Chaminade got within 14-10 but it was too little too late as a Beetstra kill secured the win.
