Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific made quick work of Dominican on Saturday afternoon as they posted a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-13) win on Saturday afternoon.
The victory increases the Cougars recorded to a season best three matches over .500 at 10-7 while improving to 6-2 in PacWest play. Dominican falls to 3-15 and 1-9 respectively.
In the opening set Crystal Dedes had seven kills on her 11 attempts (.636 hitting percentage) to pace the Cougars to a 25-18 victory. Holding a seemingly comfortable 15-11 edge, the Penguins scored four of the next five points to pull within 16-14. From that point forward the Cougars stepped up their game as they won back-to-back points off Mattie Shelford kills and never let the visitors within striking distance.
Azusa Pacific continued to roll in the second set. They jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the frame which forced Dominican into an early timeout. The brief stoppage did little to stem the Cougars onslaught as the home team continued to pull away as they took a two set lead in the match.
The Cougars started strong and overcame a very brief Penguins push to sweep the match. Azusa Pacific jumped out to a relaxed 11-4 lead only to see the visitors pull within 13-9. However that four-point spread was as close as Dominican got the rest of the stanza. The home team scored 12 of the last 16 points to close out the match.
Dedes recorded a match high 10 kills to go along with her solid .351 hitting percentage. Shelford had an eight-kill effort to aid in the victorious effort. Nine different players had at least one kill for the home team.
Jaden Louie dished out a match best 22 assists. Kristina Kam (20) and Alicia Utke (12) posted their second straight match in as many days with double figure digs.
Madeline Powelson had a team best seven kills for the Penguins.
Azusa Pacific hits the road for the rest of the month beginning on Oct. 16 with a match at Chaminade. The Cougars will play their next six matches away from the Felix Event Center. Their next home match is Nov. 1 against Dixie State.
