Second Straight Comeback Win for the Cougars

Box Score LAIE, Hawaii – For the second straight game it was going to take a comeback. And for the second straight game, the Cougars came through with a win.

Trailing from the first minute the Azusa Pacific men's soccer squad was boxed into a corner but they came out swinging each time they got down. The Cougars posted a 3-2 win over BYU-Hawaii to complete their four-game swing through the Hawaiian Islands.

"I give our guys a lot of credit for fighting back from the early deficit," said head coach Dave Blomquist. "We got in a hole early but we kept fighting and played with a 'never quit' mindset."

After falling in the first of four games away from the mainland, the Cougars won three straight. They return home with a 7-2 overall record and a 4-1 mark in PacWest play. Every team in the league now has a conference loss. BYU-Hawaii was the last team to drop a game as they fall to 4-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in PacWest games.

It took 50 seconds for the Seasiders to score the game's first goal on Saturday. Zak Epplette put the home team in front with his third goal of the season.

In the ninth minute Jeremy Bishop knotted the score at 1-1 when he took a cross from Keyran Kelly and buried the ball into the back of the net. It was the Cougars first shot of the game.

Unfortunately the home team took the lead right back. Jace Green deposited the ball in the goal for his sixth net finder of the year in the 11th minute.

Casey Sbrana tied the score at 2-2 in the 40th minute with his first goal of the season. He controlled a loose ball in the box and headed into the net.

It was the first time in 2014 that Azusa Pacific played in a half where at least four goals were scored between the two teams.

The second half was a low scoring 45 minutes. The Cougars got the most important goal of the game in the 87th minute. Colton Lamb took a cross from Luke Ackermann in recording his first goal of the season and propelling the Cougars to victory.

"Luke played a nice ball over to Colton who put a nice touch on it that find its way behind the goalie," said Blomquist. "It's tough to come back but our team played until the final horn and they really earned the win."

BYU-Hawaii outshot the Cougars 12-10 but Azusa Pacific held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Tyler Jaramillo made three saves in front of the net to earn the victory.

Azusa Pacific returns to the friendly confines of the Cougar Soccer Complex on Thursday when they host Holy Names at 5:30 p.m.
