AZUSA,, Calif.-- Coming off a tough loss to Fresno Pacific on Monday, the Azusa Pacific tennis team bounced back with a 7-2 win over No. 15 (NCAA Division II) Cal State L.A. on Friday afternoon. The Cougars took a 3-0 edge in doubles, narrowly winning on courts two and three, before clinching the match with four wins in singles action.
At No. 2 doubles
Samantha Kaneta and
Brejohn McCrary outlasted Tiffani Shaik and Sydney Postal, winning 7-3 in a tie breaker to post a 9-8 victory. At No. 1 the 10th ranked duo of
Emily Harris and
Danae Ingwaldson needed an extra game to notch a 9-7 defeat of Christie Lau and Leora Hemmerich. Â The Cougars tabbed their first win of the day when
Lindsey Yeom and
Kim Koetterheinrich cruised to a quick 8-1 win over Jill Sangria and Samantha Sismundo.
Azusa Pacific got within a match of sealing the win after Yeom sprinted to a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Leung to improve to 5-2. The Cougars then clinched the victory after McCrary rallied from a 4-1 first set deficit to post a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3. Ingwaldson fell to Hemmerich 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.
With the match in hand Kaneta and Harris each went to superbreakers. Harris fell in a heartbreaker, losing 3-6, 6-4, 10-4, while Kaneta gutted out a tough 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 defeat of Shaik at No. 4.
The Cougars won't have much time to rest, as they take on Western New Mexico on Saturday morning, before welcoming Hope International for a 1:30 p.m. match on Monday.
