Irvine, Calif. – Concordia validated it's No. 5-ranking in the last NAIA Coaches Poll by disposing of No. 6 Azusa Pacific in rather easy fashion Wednesday afternoon, downing the Cougars, 7-2. It was the Eagles third straight victory over Azusa Pacific.
Concordia won 2 of 3 doubles matches and then downed the Cougars top 4 singles players with 3 of the matches being straight 2-set wins.
Casey Wetzig had a hand in both Cougar points, teaming with Leah Hoffee for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and then downing Concordia's Kristin Yep, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The loss separates the Cougars from the GSAC's tennis power pack of Fresno Pacific, Concordia, and Point Loma. At 5-3 overall, 4-3 in GSAC play and with 9 conference matches remaining, Azusa Pacific can play its way back into contention for the GSAC crown, but the Cougars' margin of error is ever so slim.
The Cougars can being that turnaround next Tuesday when they host Biola in a GSAC match at 1:30 p.m.
