AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific appeared to be headed for a lead after doubles play Thursday against Fresno Pacific. The No. 2 team of Jennifer Dao and Kim Tran fought off match point and retook the lead in the match while the No. 3 team of Raquel Gottfried and Katy Jelsma had a commanding 4-1 lead.
However, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Fresno Pacific stormed back to claim all 3 doubles matches and split its singles wins right down the middle to post a 6-3 win over No. 5-ranked Cougars.
The Sunbirds got wins from their top 3 singles players, including Jelena Pandzic's 6-1, 6-0 win over Dao, to sneak past the Cougars who ran off 3 wins in the bottom half of the ladder.
Bay Daniels beat Megan Hanner, 6-4, 6-2, and Gottfried and Jelsma each bounced back to win in singles.
The loss drops the Cougars to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the GSAC.
