SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Azusa Pacific plated 10 runs in its final 2 at-bats of a nightcap to blow away Cal State San Bernardino, 12-5, and gain a season-opening split on a blustery afternoon in the Inland Empire.

San Bernardino scored again on an errant Cougar throw to complete the scoring.

However, that was the only time the Cougars took advantage on their opportunities. Azusa Pacific stranded 9 runners in the game, including 5 in scoring position. Junior pitcher Kris Franks, who retired the first 10 Coyotes of the game, suffered the defeat.
In the second game, San Bernardino attacked Cougar pitcher Michelle Coleman, getting 3 runs in the first inning and scooting out to a 5-2 lead after 4 innings. However, that's when Cougar bats came alive. Five hits pushed across 6 runs in the fifth inning, with the big blow being freshman Megan Zimmerer's first collegiate hit, a 2-run double that scored Mikesell and Cassi Sweeney to tie the game at 5-5. Shimasaki followed with a single to push across the go-ahead run in the form of Bailey Blazek. Courtney Cleaves finished the onslaught with another 2-run double.

Zimmerer had another run-scoring single and finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Cleaves was 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs, and Sweeney was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Coleman settled down finished the game by retiring 10 of the final 12 batters she faced.
