FRESNO, Calif. -- In an early season match-up taut with intrigue, a pair of top-5 NAIA tennis programs met for the first time and, for now, it looks like Fresno Pacific has an edge on Azusa Pacific.
The No. 2-ranked Sunbirds (1-1, 1-0) got dominating performances from Jelena Pandzic and Angelina Minova that led them to a 6-3 win over the No. 5-ranked Cougars at the Harold and Betty Haak Tennis Complex.
Pandzic and Minova dropped only 2 games between them as they both earned straight set wins. They also each were victorious in doubles play, particularly Minova teaming with Anna Karavayeva at No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 win.
The Cougars (3-1, 1-1) tried to rally with Kim Tran earning a win at No. 4 singles but Raquel Gottfried lost in the third set, 10-8, to vanquish any hopes of a rally.
Azusa Pacific will next host The Master's on Wednesday in a match scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
