AZUSA, Calif. – For the second straight night, Demario Butler and Tristin King combined for over 40 points to lead the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 94-79 nonconference victory of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.).
Led by Butler and King, Azusa Pacific led wire-to-wire, warding off a few USF charges, one in the first half and a couple in the second frame to post the Cougars' seventh consecutive victory.
After combining for 46 points in last night's win over Houghton, the duo came back tonight to tally 41 points with each Cougar recording their best back-to-back efforts as Cougars. Butler led the way with 21 points while King dropped in 20, including 13 in the second half.
St. Francis, which is ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Division II Coaches Poll, was paced by Dusty Beucler's game-high 27 points off the bench. Beucler converted an impressive 11-of-14 shots, and tallied 15 in the second half to keep the Indiana version of the Cougars within striking distance in the second half.
Azusa Pacific took advantage of its quickness by out-scoring USF 16-6 on fast breaks, and then getting Saint Francis post players in quick foul trouble. Brothers Trey and Eric Eaton were limited to just 28 minutes of playing time because of a foul issues, and as a result Azusa Pacific center Chidi Ajufo took advantage, scoring a career-high 11 points. Guard Mike Danielian added 15 points of the bench.
Azusa Pacific led 46-38 at halftime, using a 9-2 at the start of the game to take control of play. USF rallied to within 3 at 20-17 with 9 minutes left in the half. The Cougars, however, used a 19-9 run over a 6-minutes stretch to push its advantage to 39-26. Butler led Azusa Pacific's first-half charge with 11 points, and Mike Danielian came off the bench to toss in 10.
With the victory Azusa Pacific improves to 11-1 on the season while Saint Francis falls to 11-6.
