Stirm Lifts Cougars

IRVINE, Calif. -- Many more games like this, and Azusa Pacific head coach Phil Wolf could get a full head of gray hair.

Of course, freshman Brandon Stirm will gladly provide the "Just for Men."

Stirm's scored 4 times this year, all of them game winners, and none may be bigger than the one he had today. After the Cougars had a sure win in regulation snatched form their hands late in the game, Stirm made up for it with a game-winner 8 minutes into the first overtime to lift the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 2-1 GSAC win at Concordia.

"This guy is unbelievable," said Wolf. "He has 4 goals and all of them game winners—Holy Names, Berry, Fresno Pacific and now Concordia—those are some very good teams that he's stepped up against."

Coming off a huge 3-0 win over No. 2-ranked Fresno Pacific, Wolf's biggest fear was a letdown. It came in the form of a sluggish first half, but fortunately, the Cougars got things together and put the pressure on in the second half.

Andriy Budnyy continues to make a difference as he put the Cougars on the board in the 59th minute off a nice set play. The Cougars had one of their 9 corner kicks, and Phil Hoyt gave a short corner to a wide open Skelly Kellar just outside the box. Kellar lofted a beautiful ball into the box that Budnyy headed just under the crossbar.

Had it not been for a late equalizer by Concordia's Chris Anderson in the 83rd minute, the Cougars would've escaped with less of a headache.

Nontheless, they escaped and with a win to boot. Morgan Cathey made 6 saves, including one on Anderson in the waning seconds of regulation in which he punched just over the crossbar.

The Cougars controlled play in overtime getting the only shots of the extra time. After a flurry in front of the Cougar goal, which Cathey collected, he sent a ball to a waiting Kris Van Houten down the left sideline. Van Houten then served a ball to the Budnyy waiting in the middle of the field and the Cougars were off on a 4-on-3 breakaway.

Budnyy beat a pair of defenders and found a wide-open Stirm running down the right side. Stirm settled the ball on the run in the box and then blasted a rocket inside the far post for the game-winner.

"If you would have told me that at the end of this week we'd be 2-0, I'd tell you that you were crazy," said Wolf. "I would've settled for a draw on the road and would've been happy. But we got the win, and now we are in a good spot, and we got a very difficult road game out of the way."

The Cougars nearly had a chance to put the game away in regulation but an Ian Leibbrandt shot banged off the far post, and Concordia cleared it away from danger.

With the win, Azusa Pacific remains unbeaten and improves to 8-0-1 overall, 2-0 GSAC. Concordia drops to 4-5, 0-1.
