AZUSA, Calif. -- In his first game of the season Andriy Budnyy scored his first goal of the year to lift the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Azusa Pacific from near defeat and a to a 2-2 tie with Concordia (Ore.) in the opening game of the 18th Annual Cougar Classic on Azusa Square Field.
With the tie, Azusa Pacific moves to 4-0-1 overall, while Concordia is now 2-2-1.
The Cougars seemingly played catch-up the entire game despite controlling much of the action. Concordia's Joe Beytebiere put the Cavaliers on the board in the 36th minute on a nice one-two combination in the box with Lucas Brooks.
Seven minutes out of the intermission, Ferguson Agwu gave the Cougars the equalizer when he one-timed a beautiful cross from the left side from Skelly Kellar.
Azusa Pacific outshot the Cavaliers by a hefty 29-11 margin, including a 13-4 gap on goal, but the Cavaliers took advantage of what few opportunities they had. With 17 minutes to play, Jason Hagen took a through ball from Rigoberto Rivas and promptly tucked it away inside the far post to give Concordia a 2-1 advantage.
But, in the final minutes, Budnyy answered. He collected a pass in the box, moved from the right side to the left and then moved back to the right and rifled a low shot that skipped across the ground and into the net to force overtime.
In the overtime period, the Cougars outshot the Cavaliers, 4-2, but none threatened.
Julian Cottrell collected a pair of saves. Concordia keeper Jeremy Wells made 11 saves.
