AZUSA, Calif. -- Lorena Zuleta had a match-high 16 kills and 11 blocks to lead the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Fresno Pacific to a 3-0 GSAC volleyball win over Azusa Pacific Tuesday night in Azusa.
With the win, the GSAC champion Fresno Pacific remains unbeaten and moves to 30-0 overall, 19-0 GSAC. It is the Sunbirds' 11th 30-win campaign in the past 20 seasons. The Cougars, meanwhile, fall to 19-12, 10-9 and could very well fall back into a 3-way tie for fourth in the GSAC with Vanguard and Biola.
It took the defending NAIA champion Sunbirds a little while to get going, but once they warmed up, they showed everyone in the Felix Event Center just why they are the defending champs and are riding the crest of a 45-match winning streak.
The opening game was back-and-forth until Katrina Anker and Chelsea Morgan recorded back-to-back kills to tie the game at 22-22. At that point the Sunbirds, who have won 27 straight over the Cougars in a streak that dates back to 1994, scored the next 4 points to take a 26-22 lead and for all intents and purpose put the match away.
The Sunbirds stormed out of game 2 and opened a 7-2 lead. Mesha Wimer had back-to-back blocks in the opening run as the Sunbirds, who had 16 total blocks in the match, got 8 of them in game 2 to thwart the Cougars' chances.
They kept the Cougars at an arm's length until they turned a 20-14 advantage into a 25-14 lead on a pair of Lira Xavier kills and the blocking of Xavier and Zuleta.
Four Sunbirds reached double figures in kills to pace a balanced attack. Xavier and Wimer both chipped in with 12 kills apiece. Wimer had 5 blocks.
Morgan once again led Azusa Pacific with 12 kills and 2 blocks. She was the lone Cougar to reach double-figures and no Cougar had more than 6 kills. Katrina Anker added 12 digs to go along with 2 aces and 5 kills. Colleen Walker and Alison Pattison each had 10 digs.
