Cougars Dominate Mustangs

AZUSA, Calif. -- Jenny Brickner and Chelsea Morgan combined for 26 kills and 9 blocks as Azusa Pacific throttled The Master's, 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-16), in both team's regular-season finale Saturday night in the Felix Event Center.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 20-12 overall, 11-9 GSAC and forge their way into a 3-way tie for fourth in the GSAC with Biola and Vanguard. The Cougars, who will participate in next week's NAIA Region II Playoffs will learn of their fate sometime Sunday and still have an outside shot of hosting a first-round game.

The Master's drops to 19-15, 9-11.

It was all Cougars from the get-go. They opened up a 21-17 lead in the opening game before the Mustangs rallied to take a 24-22 lead. Colleen Walker recorded back-to-back kills to tie the game at 24. Brickner's kill not only tied the game at 26-26, but it also started a 5-0 run by the Cougars to end the game and snatch the life from the Mustangs.

Walker finished with 11 kills as 4 Cougars recorded double-digits. Brickner and Morgan tied for match-high honors with 13 kills apiece.

The Cougars held a 12-10 lead in game 2 when Brianne Huff, Courtney Fox and Katrina Anker recorded consecutive kills before a Mustang error opened a 16-10 Cougar lead. The Mustangs got no closer than 4 points (20-16) before the Cougars opened a 29-21 lead.

As a team, the Cougars out-hit the Mustangs, .265-.054. They also had 28 more kills and 3 more blocks than the Mustangs.

The Cougars scored 10 of the first 11 points in the third game, 3 of them coming off aces by Walker. The Cougars then ballooned the lead to 21-5 off 3 kills by Walker and 3 Mustang attack errors. Walker had 5 of her 11 kills in the third game.

Alison Pattison had a match-high 23 digs. Walker added 13 digs to go along with 3 aces. Huff chipped in with 7 kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces.
