FULLERTON, Calif. -- The NAIA's No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific scored 14 minutes into the contest and never looked back in 3-1 GSAC win Wednesday at Hope International.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 12-1-1 overall, 8-1 GSAC. Hope International falls to 2-14, 0-9.
Playing on a soggy field with intermittent showers, the Cougars out-shot the Royals by a whopping 37-7 margin. They dominated the run of play, and the score could have been much worse.
In the 14th minute, Stephanie Weber fired a point blank shot that deflected off Royal keeper Claudia Martha and to a waiting Mari Kasamoto, who hammered home the rebound for her first career goal and a 1-0 Cougar lead.
Nearly 25 minutes later, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick, which Stephanie Bays converted for her eighth goal of the year. She now has 7 goals in the past 6 games.
The Cougars carried the 2-0 lead into the intermission, and then in the 54th minute, freshman Taryn Caylor buried her third goal of the year off an assist by Bays.
The Royals got on the board in the 79th minute on a goal by Nicole Collins when she dribbled around Cougar GK Jill Colfer and passed the ball into a wide open net. Colfer made 5 saves.
The Cougars close out the regular season Saturday when they host Point Loma Nazarene at 5 p.m. in Cougar Stadium.
