Three's the Magic Number

Azusa Pacific 5
Cal State L.A. 4

(AZUSA, Calif.) -- Azusa Pacific won 2-of-3 doubles' matches to take a 2-1 lead, then did just enough in singles' play to get a 5-4 win over Cal State L.A. for the Cougars' first win of the season.

The turning point of the match came in the final doubles' match of the day. Just 1 set away from an easy 8-5 win, the Cougars' No 3-doubles team of Marilyn Wise and Andrea Yorkey lost their 7-5 lead, but rebounded and cruised in the tiebreaker, 7-2, to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

And while the Cougars were pushed to the brink, they got the necessary 3 wins to clinch the match. At No. 4-singles, Yorkey cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win. However, Mayu Sato at No. 1 and Brianne Hahn at No. 5 both squeaked out identical 7-5, 6-4 wins that proved to be the difference.

"The girls really gutted out a tough match today," said Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren. "We played solid doubles, then fought hard in the singles. Mayu showed a lot of poise and maturity in her win at No. 1."

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 1-1 overall. Earlier in the day, the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Preseason Poll was released, and Azusa Pacific cracked the rankings at No. 18. Cal State L.A. drops to 0-1.
