Nothing But Zeros

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- It not a loss, but it's also not the result Azusa Pacific would have liked to have as it open its GSAC title defense.  Cal Baptist and Azusa Pacific, the defending GSAC champions, played to a scoreless double-overtime draw in the 2002 GSAC opener for both teams in Riverside.

The Cougars are now 3-3-3 overall, 0-0-1 GSAC, while Cal Baptist 3-3-1, 0-0-1.

In a sloppy game where a total of 69 (43 for Cal Baptist, 26 for Azusa Pacific) fouls were called, and 8 cautions were issued, neither team was able to mount much of an attack the entire day.  The Cougars outshot the Lancers, 16-10, but CBU put 7 shots on net as opposed to the Cougars' 3.  Neither keeper was severely tested.

The Cougars had a chance to put the game away in the final minutes of regulation.  Freshman forward Ian Leibbrandt, who was playing for the first time in more than 2 weeks, broke loose from his defender and beat Lancer GK Robert Turner to his right.  Leibbrandt had an open net right in front of him, but his angled shot hit the right post and deflected out of bounds.
Cal Baptist had the best opportunity 7 minutes into the first overtime when Mohammed Elzein fired a lazer to Cougar GK Morgan Cathey's left, but Cathey was perfectly positioned and swallowed it up.  Cathey collected a season-high 7 saves.

Azusa Pacific hosts Vanguard Saturday night at 7 p.m. in a GSAC doubleheader with the women.
