Cougars Use Bottom to Drop Cal State L.A.

GLENDORA, CALIF. – Azusa Pacific received strong support from the bottom half of its lineup to defeat CS Los Angeles, 6-3, in the first dual match of the 2002 season Wednesday afternoon.
While the Cougars' No. 1-player Eva Dvorakova and No. 2 Jen Hansen struggled in the top spots, it was the No. 3 through 6 players that all scored relatively easy wins, lifting the Cougars' to the victory.
 
Freshman Mayu Sato (No. 3) defeated CSLA's Jessica Scruggs, 6-3, 6-3, and senior Patty Guinto (No. 4) defeated the Eagles' Brittany Kealer, 6-1, 6-0.
 
Meanwhile junior Brianne Hahn and freshman Marilyn Wise, playing in the 5 and 6 spots, rolled to easy 6-0, 6-0 wins.
 
In doubles action, Dvorakova and Sato fell to CSLA's Tamara Encia and Katharina Menzel, 8-2.  However, Hansen and Hahn defeated Scruggs and Kealer, 8-2, and Guinto and Wise downed Chrys Scotton and Michelle Gee, 8-1.
 
With the win, the Cougars jump out the gate at 1-0.  Azusa Pacific is in action again tomorrow when they face Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona.
