Westmont Sweeps Error-Prone Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific fell victim to its own untimely errors and an efficient Westmont attack as the Warriors defeated the Cougars, 30-17, 30-21, 31-29, in GSAC-action in Azusa.

Things started quickly for the Cougars, who took an early 6-1 lead in the opening game. However, Westmont regrouped and took a 7-6 lead it would not relinquish. The Warriors hit an impressive 39.5% in the opening game, committing just 4 errors in 38 attempts.

The loss seemed to deflate the Cougars' hopes, as they were never able to muster any sort of rhythm the rest of the night while the Warriors kept rolling along.

Azusa Pacific tried to make things interesting in the third game taking a 17-12 lead midway through the game. The Cougars kept the Warriors at a 3-point bay for most of the way and eventually opened a 24-19 lead.

However, the Warriors fought back to tie the game at 25-25. The Cougars were serving on game point at 29-28, but the Warriors failed to buckle, scoring the next 3 points to take the match.

Azusa Pacific ended the match hitting a measly 8.06% (31 kills, 21 errors, 124 attempts). Westmont ended up at 20.8% (46 kills, 21 errors, 120 attempts), but had several key kills at crucial points in the match.

Westmont also blistered the Cougars to the tune of 11 service aces, 69 digs and 12 blocks. The Cougars had 10 blocks of their own, but just 45 digs and 7 aces.

Sophomore All-American Jenna Sagehorn (Chino Hills, Calif./Whittier Christian HS) led the Cougars with 10 kills and 7 digs. Christy Kimmel (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) had 5 kills, 4 blocks and 8 digs for the Cougars.

With loss, the Cougars fall to 12-5 overall, 4-4 GSAC. Westmont moves to 9-3, 5-3 GSAC. The Cougars are in action again Tuesday evening in El Cajon against Christian Heritage College at 7 p.m.
