Cougars Spear Lancers

AZUSA CALIF. – It was billed as a showdown between 2 of the NAIA's top 15 teams, and it turned into a one-sided affair as Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, defeated No. 15 Cal Baptist, 3-1, in the GSAC opener for both teams in Azusa.

The win is the Cougars' 12^th straight over CBU since 1994, and their 20^th in 23 meetings since 1991.

Cal Baptist (3-1, 0-1) seemed to seize early control when Celeste Rodriguez scored just 3 minutes into the game to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

However, the Cougars (4-1, 1-0) remained calm and then roared to 3 unanswered goals over a 30-minute span to suck the life from the Lancers.

"We haven't been on the field for 2 weeks, and it showed tonight," said Azusa Pacific second-year head coach Jason Surrell. "They (Cal Baptist) were more competitive than we were from the outset, then when they scored that goal, it ticked us off and got us going."

Freshman Stephanie Bays (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) knotted the game at 1-1 in the 23^rd minute, and then less than 15 minutes later senior Kimber Carter (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) scored her first goal of the season off a beautiful connection with senior All-American Chrissy Sanford (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Newberry Park HS).

Eight minutes into the second half, the Cougars had a free kick from 45 yards out when senior All-American Andrea Alfiler (Kapaa, Hawaii/Kapaa HS) opted for a quick restart and fed junior Jen Sousa (Chino, Calif./St. Lucy's HS). Sousa sent the ball towards the net and Cal Baptist GK Ashley Montgomery, who misplayed it into the net to round out the scoring for the Cougars.

The Cougars travel to Costa Mesa to face Vanguard University at 7 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 29) night.
