Cougars Soar Past Sunbird for Tenth Win

FRESNO, CALIF. -- Junior Jordan Jones celebrated his homecoming trip to Fresno by scoring his eighth goal of the season and lifting the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Azusa Pacific to a key 2-0 GSAC victory over Fresno Pacific Tuesday afternoon in Fresno.

The win is the Cougars' tenth of the season, and it keeps them in a 3 way tie atop the GSAC leader board with 3 games remaining. The Master's and the Cougars are 6-1 (Westmont was 5-1 heading into today's match with Hope International), while Fresno Pacific falls one game behind at 5-2.

Jones, a native of nearby Clovis, Calif., converted a pass from junior Jeff Johnson past Sunbird GK and NAIA Player of the Week Nick Hammond, giving the Cougars all they needed just 11 minutes into the match.

Senior All-American and NAIA Player of the Year candidate Matt Evans gave the Cougars an insurance tally in the 64th minute, his ninth goal of the season, with a header off a cross from senior Matt Hall.

With the goal, Evans brings his season point total to 28 (9 goals, 10 assists). He is now just 7 points away from becoming Azusa Pacific's all-time leading scorer.

With the win, the Cougars are now 10-1-2 overall, 6-1 GSAC. Fresno Pacific drops to 8-6 overall, 5-2 GSAC.
