LA MIRADA, CALIF. -- No matter what the rankings indicate or how well things going for Azusa Pacific, there's something about the city of La Mirada that spells doom for the Cougar volleyball team.
Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 11 in today's NAIA Coaches' Poll and off to its best start in 20 years, nonetheless lost for the 10th straight time at Biola, falling to the Eagles, 8-15, 5-15, 15-6, 13-15. The Cougars haven't won in La Mirada since 1991.
The Cougars struggled at the net, managing just a .201 attack clip while committing 34 errors. Additionally, the Cougar defense, which had been playing quite well in recent weeks, tallied just 2 blocks and committed 4 errors in the match.
Senior Lydia Ayala continued her fine play with 16 kills in 30 attempts. However, the Cougars couldn't stop Biola's Laura Mitchell, who posted 23 kills in just 44 attempts (.409).
The loss drops Azusa Pacific's overall record to 14-3 and 4-2 in the GSAC, tied for third place with Biola, which improves to 10-5 overall, 4-2 in the GSAC.
