Despite Loss, It's a Season to Remember for Cougars

Lexington, Ky. -- By intercollegiate standards, Azusa Pacific women's tennis is still just a babe at 3 years of age, but year 3 will one to remember decades from now.

Azusa Pacific had the finest season of its young existence come to a halt today at the NAIA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, falling hard to No. 3-ranked Oklahoma City, 8-1, Tuesday morning. Azusa Pacific, which was making its first-ever appearance at the NAIA Tournament, sees its Cinderella season end while Oklahoma City moves on to tomorrow's quarterfinals.

The Stars wasted little time taking control of the match, sweeping all 3 singles matches by taking 24 of 30 games.  And had it not been Cougar ace Paulina Janus's spot on the rug, Oklahoma City would have had a near perfect match.  The Stars overwhelmed the Cougars, shutting out APU in 5 of 12 singles sets.  Cedolia Akesson won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, and Ami Berthe swept at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.  Janus, who has been a sterling standout throughout the entire season, won at No. 1, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) for her 18th victory in 19 singles matches this season.

The Cougars close out the season at 15-5 overall.  With the victory, Oklahoma City improves to 17-3.
