AZUSA, CALIF. – Azusa Pacific overcame not only Cal Baptist but also itself to post a critical 16-18, 15-12, 16-14, 15-10 GSAC victory over the Lancers.
The Cougars squandered a couple of sizable leads, including a 14-9 cushion in game 1, and yet still had enough stamina in the end to knock off the Lancers for the second time this season.
Freshman
Jenna Sagehorn led the Cougars with 22 kills, followed by
T.J. Gause with 18 and
Christy Kimmel with 14.
The Cougars failed to convert 7 services into a game-winning point in the opening game, allowing the Lancers enough time to come. Even after the Lancers tied the game at 14-14, the Cougars still had a chance to win, serving with a 16-15 lead. However, CBU regained serve and tallied 3 straight to win the game.
The match swung on a controversial call in the third game. With the score tied 14-14, CBU's Silvia Lopez put down a ball that appeared to give the Lancers' a 15-14 lead, one serve away from a 2-1 match lead. However, the attack was called out, taking the apparent point and the serve away from CBU. The Cougars then served out the game with back-to-back points.
The Cougars continued to take advantage by jumping out to a 5-1 game-4 lead and cruised on in for the victory, snapping Cal Baptist's 5-match winning streak.
With the win, the Cougar improve to 19-7 overall, 9-7 in the GSAC, while improving their playoff chances. Cal Baptist falls to 10-12 overall, 8-9 in the GSAC.
