SCC Takes GSAC Opener Before Second Game Suspended

WEST COVINA, Calif. -- So. Cal College opened the 1999 Golden State Athletic Conference season in fine fashion, scored 2 late runs to win game 1, 2-0, before the second game as suspended in the seventh inning due to darkness.

The defending GSAC champion, SCC rode the pitching of senior Gretchen Brandt whose complete-game shutout included 12 strikeouts and just 3 hits which led to her fifth win on the season.

Cougar Jodi Miller nearly matched Brandt's effort, shutting out SCC  until the seventh.  However, 2 errors, a sacrifice and a single helped account for the Vanguards' 2 runs.  Christina Blankenship reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice.  Chrissy Vega singled Blankenship to third, and Blankenship then stole home for the game's first run.  Vega later come home on a sacrifice fly by Alicia Groshon.

Vega finished the game 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Rachel Carver added 2 hits.  Lorna Lyttle, Jenna Sampson and Alisa Arrigoni each had one hit for Azusa Pacific.

(Later in the season, SCC scored 4 runs in the seventh inning the win the second game 7-3.)

SCC improves to 13-4 overall, 2-0 in the GSAC, while Azusa Pacific falls to 10-12 overall, 0-2 in the GSAC.
