Cougars Split Opener With Dominguez

WEST COVINA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific softball split its season-opening doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills, winning the first game, 4-1, before dropping the  nightcap, 7-5.

In the first game, Cougar pitcher Jodi Miller shut down the Toro offense, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits over 7 innings of work.  Alisa Arrigoni was the offensive difference for APU, scoring a pair of runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate.

In the second game, the Toro bats came alive with 11 hits to overcome an early 4-1 deficit.  The top 3 hitters in the Toro line-up -- Sasha Shell (2-for-4), Monica Chavirra (3-for-3) and Kaite Huhn (2-for-4) -- combined for 7 hits, including a pair of doubles while collecting 5 RBIs.  Arrigoni again led the Cougars, producing a 2-run double and later scoring in a 4-run Cougar first inning.

Azusa Pacific returns to the diamond Tuesday, hosting UC Riverside at 1 p.m.
