Johnson Scores Twice in GSAC Win

AZUSA, CALIF.-- He may be diminutive, but freshman Jeff Johnson was huge in Azusa Pacific collecting its first GSAC win of the season. The 5-foot-8, 140-pound Johnson scored both goals in Azusa Pacific's to a 2-1 victory over Christian Heritage College, Friday night in Azusa.

Less than 5 minutes into the game, the fleet-footed Johnson used a long lead pass by All-American Matt Evans to out-run a Hawk defender and lift a high-arching 20-foot shot over CHC's charging goalkeeper, Neil Saffer, putting Azusa Pacific up 1-0.

However, 5 minutes later, Hawk Jeff Vigil converted a low-header just inside the near post to tie the game at 1-1.

Johnson put Azusa Pacific back up for good in the 25th minute. Freshman Jordan Jones miss-hit a cross from Jon Oliva directly in front of the net. Saffer, playing Jones, was at the opposite end of the net when a streaking Johnson came up and tapped in Jones' miss-hit.

The Cougars' 2-1 halftime lead stood throughout the second half, but it took some heroics from sophomore Dan Wilson to preserve the win. With less than 5 minutes left in the game, Christian Heritage staged one last charge at the goal. As the ball was knocked around in front of the Cougar net, goalkeeper Scott Strahammer found himself out of position. With the net wide open, Christian Heritage fired a shot point blank in front of the net. A retreating Wilson, though, stuck his right leg out and deflected the ball back into the air at the goal line. The Cougars then cleared the ball and hung on for the win.

Johnson now has a team-leading 7 goals on the season. This is his third multiple-goal game of the season. He also had 2 goals in a Cougar win over Cal State Hayward and Cal State Monterey Bay.

With the win, the Cougars, who have won 3 of their past 4 games heading into next week's GSAC road trip (at Vanguard and Concordia), improve to 5-6-1 overall and even their GSAC record at 1-1.
