Biography

THIS YEAR: A viable NAIA Player of the Year candidate, highly-decorated senior Matt Evans is looking to put one final feather in his hat with a run towards a national championship . . . Ranks fifth on the Cougars' career scoring list with 91 points ... Needs 35 points to become Azusa Pacific's all-time leading scorer ... Needs just 19 points to move into second place ... Is a 3-time All-GSAC selection and 2-time All-American ... A gifted player around whom the Cougar offense runs ... A great play-maker with an extremely strong leg . . . Is a dangerous scoring threat from midfield and yet can assist on just as many goals . . . Physical and quick with great field vision . . . Mature for his age and known for his poise. 

2000: Named NAIA All-American first team and GSAC Player of the Year . . . Used a 31-point season to move into fifth place on the Cougar career scoring list with 91 points in 3 seasons . . .Led the team in goals, assists and points for the second straight season . . . Found the back of the net on over 20 percent of his shots (11 goals, 51 shots) . . . Registered his second career hat trick to lead Azusa Pacific to a 3-1 victory over USIU . . . Tallied a season-high 6 points with 2 goals and 2 assists in a 5-0 win over CS Hayward . . . Scored the first goal of a 4-1 victory over Point Loma in the NAIA Region II semifinal. 

1999: Named NAIA All-American second team and All-GSAC first team . . . Tallied team-highs in points, goals, assists and shots . . . In 10 games in which Evans registered at least 1 point, the Cougars were unbeaten (8-0-2) . . . Scored 2 goals in each game of consecutive victories over CS Monterey Bay and College of Notre Dame . . . Registered a season-high 5 points with 2 goals and an assist in the 4-0 win over CS Monterey Bay . . . Collected a goal and 2 assists in a 12-1 win over eventual NAIA Region II playoff opponent CS Hayward. 

1998: The only freshman named All-GSAC after scoring a conference frosh record 35 points in 19 games . . . Set the Cougar season record with 11 assists . . . Registered at least 1 point in 12 games (the Cougars were 11-1 in those games) including a career-high 10 (4 goals and 2 assists) in an 11-0 victory over GSAC rival Concordia . . . Led Azusa Pacific to road victories over No. 3-ranked Birmingham-Southern (2-0) and No. 23 Berry (2-1) with a goal in each game . . . Scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Cal State Hayward in only his third collegiate game. 

1997: Attended classes at Azusa Pacific but redshirted the season. 

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered 4 years in varsity soccer at Maranatha High in Sierra Madre, Calif., playing for former Cougar standout Rob Gurule . . . Was a 3-time All-CIF and 4-time All-Alpha League pick . . . Was also a 3-time Alpha League MVP . . . As a 1997 senior, recorded 36 goals and 12 assists while leading the Minuteman to the CIF championship game . . . Was 1 of just 3 Californians named to the 33-player 1997 Parade All-America team . . . Also lettered 4 years as a place kicker for football. 

PERSONAL: Born Aug. 26, 1978, in Glendale, Calif., to Joel and Carol Evans . . . Is 1 of 6 children . . . Younger sister Rachel is a junior midfielder for the Cougar women's soccer team . . . Older sister Becca was a 2-time All-GSAC softball player at Point Loma Nazarene . . . Played 3 years in the Olympic Development League and was a member of its under-15 state team and the under-17 junior national team
